Protect Leather Furniture Graphic

Leather furniture gives your home an elegant, classic appearance that can look truly stunning. However, it does require a bit of work to keep your leather looking its best over the years, and that includes cleaning and protecting it. Here’s how to do it properly so that you can continue to enjoy your leather furniture for many years to come:

Start with Light Cleaning

Your first step should be to wipe down your leather furniture with a clean, damp cloth. Use distilled water, and be sure to wring out as much of it as possible so that the cloth is just barely damp, rather than sopping wet. Wipe your furniture gently about once a week to prevent dust and other debris from building up. Don’t forget the cracks in between the cushions. The narrow attachment on your vacuum can be great for getting into tight crevices if you are unable to remove the cushions. Whenever you spill anything on your leather furniture, be sure to clean it up right away so that it doesn’t have a chance to soak in and stain the material. Use warm, soapy water, and always use cleaning products that are designed specifically for use on leather. Blot instead of scrub so that you don’t spread the stain and make it worse.

Protect Your Leather from Damage

Dirt is not the only thing that can damage your leather; sunlight is a major culprit in the deterioration of furniture as well. Whenever possible, keep your leather furniture out of direct sunlight, or cover it with an opaque furniture cover when it is not in use. It is also a good idea to keep your leather furniture away from air conditioning and heating vents, as the airflow can dry out the material over time. Lastly, never place heavy items on top of your leather furniture for long-term storage. The weight of the items can leave permanent indentations in the leather.

Making It Last

The final thing you can do to protect your leather over time is to treat it with leather conditioner on a regular basis. This solution will keep the material supple and soft while blocking out dust and other contaminants so that your leather stays looking its best. Be sure to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions that came with your furniture to ensure that you are using the right type of product. Follow the directions on the bottle exactly to avoid inadvertently damaging your furniture. Leather conditioner should usually be applied using a microfiber cloth about once or twice a year for the best results.
