Have you ever stopped to consider if your cleaning company uses products that are safe for the environment? Wouldn’t you prefer to use a company who is serious about the types of solutions they use to clean a home? Why does it really matter if your cleaning company is using “green” products anyway?
Many chemicals in the American marketplace have been found to be unregulated. According to EcoWatch, the latest report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found 120 hazardous and unregulated chemicals in the United States. Of these 120 chemicals, more than 90 chemicals were found in consumer and commercial products.
Even if the chemicals used in a company’s cleaning products are regulated, seniors, kids and pets are still not completely protected. Regulated chemicals can still be harmful.
There are several ways in which these chemicals can affect a person or pet.
Toxic chemicals such as ammonia, phosphorus, alkyphenol ethoxylates and petroleum can get into the water supply from runoff. Not only is this harmful to the environment and the wildlife population, but it can also get backed up into the water you drink.
Many cleaning products contain volatile compounds which can get fill the air. These chemicals can linger for quite awhile after use. Breathing in such chemicals has been shown to negatively affect the nervous system, liver and kidneys.
Get to know the cleaning company you are hiring. We recommend that consumers determine if a company holds an Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to assure the highest level of quality and care when cleaning carpet and upholstery. We also recommend that the cleaning company be a member of the Carpet Fabric Institute (CFI) which has a superior code of ethics which its certified members must uphold.
If you are concerned about the safety of a company’s products, ask to see the material safety data (MSDS). The sheets detail any potential hazards associated with the products they use. Any professional using cleaning products must provide these sheets if requested by a customer.
No one wants to get their carpet, upholstery, flooring or draperies cleaned if the residue left behind from a company’s cleaning products are filled with hazardous chemical compounds. At Chet’s Cleaning, we pride ourselves on using the safest products we can find. Most of our products are plant based which makes them safer for use and for the environment. We use top shelf products that cost more, but are extremely effective, safe and provide proven results.
