No matter how well you take care of the hard floors in your home, they put up with a lot and often are subject to quite a bit of wear and tear. Careful maintenance will ensure that exposure to dirt and frequent foot traffic doesn’t leave the floors of your home run-down and worn-out. We at Chet’s Cleaning would like to introduce several types of hard floors and what you can do to care for them properly, to ensure that they’ll be looking their best.

  1. Marble and Stone. Dust mop your floors frequently using a mild detergent or soap. Be sure to rinse the area with clean water after washing to avoid leaving any residue. Blot up any spills immediately. Don’t use cleaners containing acids on marble, limestone, travertine, or onyx. In addition, when vacuuming your floors, make sure your vacuum isn’t too worn. Metal attachments or the wheels can scratch your floor’s surface if you aren’t careful. Use rugs or mats by entrances to minimize the dirt and grit that will be tracked in by people walking through the door.
  2. Wood. One of the most important things to stay on top of is the routine sweeping and/or vacuuming. Dust, grit, or dirt sitting on the surface of your floors acts like sandpaper underfoot and is a recipe for disaster… or at least damage. Use floor protectors under heavy furniture legs. DO NOT steam clean or mop a hardwood floor.
  3. Tile and Grout. With tile floors, you can and should damp mop at least once a week. For glazed tile, any standard, multipurpose spray cleaner will work. Use a non-oil-based household cleaner that is acceptable for cleaning grout joints. For unglazed tile, use concentrated tiles that are neutral in pH.

With any of these floors, regular cleaning and maintenance on your end as a homeowner will go a long way in preventing damage. In addition, we recommend a regular professional deep cleaning. This is an investment for the future as it will extend the lifetime of your floors and ensure that they look their best. Chet’s Cleaning is a reliable company that is trained and qualified to handle any of the floor types listed above.
